Agent Spotlight - Kathy

Kathy with her son, Chris, and daughter Caitlin
Where do you call home?  Knoxville, Tennessee (close to the Great Smoky Mountains)

Are you married?
Yes, for 3 years now!

Any children?  I have three amazing children: Christopher (31), Casey (27) and Caitlin (24) plus one grandchild (Carter—2) and another on the way!

Favorite vacation destination?  Walt Disney World, of course! I do love England and Ireland though.  I was born in England and half of my family is still there.  I love going home to visit.

Favorite Walt Disney World Resort?  The Wilderness Lodge.  I love the northwest lodge feel.  I didn’t believe Disney could pull off that lodge look until I stayed there.  It’s like being in Florida at your favorite place in the whole world and then escaping to a northern lakeside lodge at night.  It is so peaceful and relaxing.

Favorite Walt Disney World attraction?
It’s a Small World.  I force my kids to ride it every time and, of course, halfway through they are singing too! Oh, and then The Haunted Mansion and Peter Pan’s Flight and Soarin and…and…

Favorite Disney restaurant?  I love so many of them, but I have to say that I love San Angel Inn the most.  I spend all day walking for miles and to go into the Mexico Pavilion in Epcot to the marketplace feels like stepping into another time and place.  It’s so cool in the restaurant after the heat of the day.  The tiles and market stores with the Mayan ruins in the background and the night sky are just amazing! Oh, the food is awesome too!

Favorite Disney snack?  Anything from Karamell-K├╝che at the Germany pavilion at Epcot.  The smell of caramel just envelops you! I have to try something different every time.  The caramel apple cookie is amazing!

Wishes, Fantasmic or IllumiNations?
Fantasmic.  My family and I just love this show—the whole experience from doing the “wave” before it starts to the music and characters.  This is one thing we never miss when we go.

Favorite Disney Souvenir?  A Christmas ornament with the date on it.  Our Christmas tree is full of travel memories, so a dated ornament is always on my list!

Earliest Disney vacation memory?
My first trip to Disney was in 1973 when I was 8.  We caught the very edge of a hurricane and it poured for most of the trip, but when you are 8 and at Disney, who cares? The park was almost empty and we walked onto everything.  I have loved Disney ever since and never looked back.

Disney Cruise Line, Disneyland or Walt Disney World?  Walt Disney World but I am looking forward to my first Disney Cruise (have to do this soon!).

Disney experience that brings tears to your eyes?  As a single mom when my children were young, I had very little money so vacation was the last thing on our list, so when I became financially stable of course the first thing I did was take my kids to Disney World! We were on a super tight budget.  We didn’t get there until really late and our reservations were upgraded to a deluxe resort at The Contemporary.  The kids were so excited to get a poolside room in the Magic Kingdom.  Sitting there at the pool with my kids that night after our first day in the park, wrapped up in towels overlooking the lake and watching The Electric Water Pageant brought tears to my eyes and still does.  Disney World will always be “our place” for me and my three kids.

Where have you traveled aside from Walt Disney World?  England, Ireland, The Bahamas, and all over the United States including much of Florida, The Blue Ridge Parkway, Reno (NV), New Mexico, Texas, South Dakota, Mackinac Island, Mystic (CT), South Carolina, Asheville, Great Smoky Mountains, and Helen (GA). My husband and I travel to a lot of state parks and camp on weekend trips.  We also love to do road trips and find the cheesiest Americana tourist attractions we can such as The Largest Ball of Popcorn in Iowa, Foamhenge in Virginia, The Geographic Center of the United States in South Dakota, The Largest Prairie Dog in South Dakota, Carhenge in North Dakota, and the World’s Largest Truck Stop in Iowa.

Favorite TV Show?
  The Big Bang Theory

Favorite Movie?
The Sound of Music

Favorite Color? Aqua blue

Favorite Book?  The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

If you had to pick another job besides being a travel agent, what would you do?
So THIS is my dream job and I am so grateful for the opportunity! If I had to pick another field, it would probably be a librarian or historian as I love to read and research, especially family history.

Let Kathy help you plan the perfect vacation for your family!
