Disney operated restaurants join Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining Month for 2017

This year's Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining Month will feature some of Disney's own restaurants, along with a handful of the finest from Disney Springs.

Jiko at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge

Jiko, The Wave, The Turf Club, Boatwrights, and Olivia's Cafe are among the Disney operated participants, joined by Morimoto Asia, STK and Paddlefish from Disney Springs.
During Magical Dining Month, over 100 Orlando area restaurants will offer prix fixe 3 course dinners for $35. One dollar from each meal will benefit Freedom Ride and BASE Camp Children’s Cancer foundation.

Whether you arrive at the restaurant as a walk-in guest or with advance reservations, just ask your server for the Visit Orlando's Magical Dining Month menu. No vouchers, coupons or flyers are needed.

New name for Characters in Flight tethered balloon at Disney Springs

A new balloon design was unveiled earlier this year for Characters in Flight, and changes have been made to the ticket kiosk to fit more closely with the new look the West Side following its transition from Downtown Disney to Disney Springs.

The tethered balloon ride at Disney Springs now has a new name - "Aerophile: The World Leader in Balloon Flight."

New Gastropub to replace Captain's Grille at Disney's Yacht Club

New gastropub to replace Captain's Grille at Disney's Yacht Club. The Ale & Compass Restaurant will open in October 2017, featuring New England-inspired comfort food for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The look of the table service restaurant will take cues from a lighthouse, with an on-stage hearth oven as a focal point.

Nearby, the Ale & Compass Lounge will also open in October, with a new look and menu. Seating is also expanded to 58 seats.

The updates began with the recent opening of the Market at Ale & Compass, a quick service grab and go location.

Drum Corps International marching performances at Disney Springs this weekend

Disney Springs will host a day of Drum Corps International marching performances this Sunday (July 9).
The Cavaliers (Rosemont, IL) at 11:00 AM
Carolina Crown (Fort Mill, SC) at 1:00 PM
The Cadets (Allentown, PA) at 3:00 PM

All performers will march through Disney Springs starting on the West Side near Cirque du Soleil La Nouba and finishing at the Marketplace near Once Upon a Toy.

New experiences coming to Disney's Contemporary Resort for New Year's Eve 2017

Disney's Contemporary Resort is offering three New Year's Eve experiences for guests visiting Walt Disney World during the holiday period.
The resort has all the bases covered, from fine dining through to a family friendly character filled evening. For reservations, call 407-WDW-DINE from July 11.

Disney’s Countdown to Midnight
“Disney Countdown to Midnight” includes dining, live music, libations and more. An interactive band and DJ will fill the dance floor, along with an appearance by Mickey and Minnie. Welcome in 2018 with a flute of bubbly and a viewing of the New Year’s Eve fireworks in the Magic Kingdom.

Hours are 8pm to 1am in the Fantasia Ballroom. This party is designed for guests 18 and older.

Pixar Party: A New Year’s Eve Celebration
“Pixar Party: A New Year’s Eve Celebration” is for children of all ages, a family-friendly way to ring in the New Year with a Disney•Pixar-inspired dinner.

Sarge welcomes you to the Ballroom of the Americas that features vignettes of beloved Pixar movies. From Andy’s Room in “Toy Story” to and Metro City with The Incredibles, the immersive celebration will include theatrical backdrops, dramatic set pieces and fun props that re-create the worlds of the Pixar films. Favorite characters will be on hand from “Toy Story,” “The Incredibles,” “Cars” and “Up.”

Kids can have fun at Pixar face painting, a balloon artist and a boot camp with Sarge, while an interactive DJ will spin hits from Radio Disney (he’s going to be in a “Cars”-inspired DJ rig from Radiator Springs). Dinner is buffet style.

At midnight, head outdoors to ring in the New Year with a viewing of the Magic Kingdom fireworks. Hours are 8pm -12:15am.

Down in New Orleans: A Disney New Year’s Eve Dining Experience
Fine dining is the theme of the third party, “Down in New Orleans: A Disney New Year’s Eve Dining Experience” in the Grand Republic Ballroom. Inspired by the Disney animated film “The Princess and the Frog,” the room is beautifully decorated French Quarter style to transport you to the Big Easy.

Actions stations will feature flavors such as oyster beignets, smoked salmon mousse cones with caviar, Kobe beef tartare and sheep’s milk ricotta gnocchi. Signature dishes will include herb-crusted Louisiana redfish, crayfish etouffee, Balck Angus beef cooked two ways, braised short ribs and filet of beef with truffled celery root silk.

A N’awlins jazz band will entertain during dinner, joined later in the evening by a vocalist who will bring to life the Academy-Award-winning classics from the film. Then slip outside with a glass of bubbly just before midnight to ring in 2018 with a private viewing area for the Magic Kingdom fireworks. Hours are 7:00 PM-12:15 AM.

Terralina Crafted Italian to replace Portobello at Disney Springs

Disney and Levy Restaurants have announced that Terralina Crafted Italian will be the name of the new restaurant concept opening in the former Portobello location at Disney Springs.

Inspired by the design and lifestyle of Italy’s Lake District, the new restaurant will be reminiscent of an Italian home, with an open kitchen, dining rooms with eclectic décor and a new veranda bar outside the main entrance.

James Beard Award-winning Chef Tony Mantuano returns from Portobello to design the new menu, and Chef Justin Plank will be back to run the kitchen.

Chef Mantuano’s authentic Italian cuisine (much of it infused with his signature olive oil imported directly from Italy) will include artisanal pizzas and fresh vegetable dishes fired up in a wood-burning oven. Two new signatures – mussels and a grilled pork chop – will be on the menu, along with favorites from Portobello such as the antipasti platter and signature pastas.

“The new food landscape at Disney Springs is amazing and the guest choices are so diverse that it has become a true dining destination,” said Andy Lansing, President and CEO of Levy Restaurants. “We are excited to open Terralina Crafted Italian and share our vision to deliver authentic food, hospitality and every last detail as part of a memorable guest experience.”

“It’s been an honor to lead the concept and vision for Terralina Crafted Italian,” said Tony Mantuano, James Beard Award-winning chef. “We wanted to create a dining experience that would transport guests to the shores of Italy. Focusing on the hearth of the kitchen, dishes will embody the passion and flare of the flames. Executive Chef Justin Plank and I cannot wait for guests to come in and have a taste of Italy.”

Terralina will be open for lunch and dinner, with an opening in the fall of 2017.

Some Grand Floridian Resort restaurants closed this week

Unplanned maintenance has resulted in the unannounced temporary closure of two Grand Floridan Resort restaurants.

1900 Park Fare will be unavailable for dinner on Thursday July 13 2017.
Grand Floridian Cafe will be unavailable from July 13 - 15 2017. 

The resort's other restaurants are operating as normal.

VIDEO - Star Wars Land model revealed at D23 Expo

Disney has revealed a large scale model of the upcoming Star Wars Land coming to Disney's Hollywood Studios in 2019.

Unveiled by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Bob Chapek , the model is on display at the D23 Expo, taking place at the Anaheim Convention Center this weekend.

“To say we are excited for the Star Wars-themed lands to open in 2019 is an understatement,” Chapek said. “All along, we have said this will be game-changing, and through the model we can begin to see how truly epic these immersive new worlds will be.”

The new 14 acre land will open with two anchor attractions – one that gives guests the chance to pilot the Millennium Falcon on a customized secret mission, and one that puts guests right in the middle of a battle between the First Order and the Resistance.
