Mediterranean Cruise Itinerary Overview

So you're thinking about taking a Mediterranean cruise with the Disney Cruise Line (DCL), but aren't really sure where to start?  This blog post will give you a brief overview of what to expect and what to look for and there will be other posts with more specific details on the ship, ports of call, and various activities for more details!

First of all - the ship.  With DCL, they send the Disney Magic across the Atlantic for their European cruise itineraries.  The Magic sailed her maiden voyage in 1998 but underwent a wonderful dry dock a few years ago so it feels like new!  It's one of DCL's smaller ships, so you get a nice intimate feeling on board.  The cruise ship offers three main dining rooms, one adults only specialty restaurant, both adult and family pools, a theater and movie theater, a spa and fitness center and so much more!

Next up - the season.  Typically, the Disney Magic is in Mediterranean ports from about May through September.  This is a beautiful time of year to visit this part of the world. The summer boasts lots of sunshine and long days with minimal rain.  Temperatures range from lows in the 50s with highs in the peak summer months reaching around the high 80s.

Home port - Most of DCLs Mediterranean itineraries begin and end in the beautiful city of Barcelona.   Sometimes you have the option to begin or end in Rome and travel to Barcelona, so if that is of interest to you, be sure to specify with your travel agent.  Many cruisers opt to add pre/post nights in their departure port to extend their vacation and help adjust to jet lag.  If you are curious about what to do in Barcelona, read more about this beautiful city here!

Ports of call - The most popular ports of call on a Disney Mediterranean itinerary include  Naples (Pompeii), Italy, Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy, Livorno (Florence, Pisa), Italy, and Villefranche (Monte Carlo, Cannes, Nice), France.  All of these cities offer beautiful scenery, rich history, and delightful dishes and DCL does a great job offering a variety of Port Adventures to suit every taste. These are popular ports with other cruise lines as well and great for a first-time Med trip if you are exploring options more broadly!

Highlights - Your personal highlights can very widely based on preferences but my personal highlights of a Mediterranean cruise include the beautiful weather, getting to see three countries full of deep history in a little over a week: tapas and flamenco in Spain, pizza and pasta in Italy, and gorgeous sweeping views where some of the rich and famous call home in France.  All Disney Cruises also include top notch service, some of the largest staterooms at sea, Broadway-caliber shows and entertainment, first run movies, and delicious food day and night!
