Holiday Fun OUTSIDE of the Parks

Happy Start to the Holiday Season, Disney Fans!!!
As you've probably heard, holiday events have already begun at both Disney's Hollywood Studios and The Magic Kingdom. (Parade filming has been taking place this week and The Studios kicked off their new event, Flurry of Fun.) It's an exciting time of year, and most of November and early December are awesome times to get to enjoy the holiday festivities without the crowds that descend upon the parks over Thanksgiving and Christmas.

But, if you are not lucky enough to be able to enjoy the parks during the slower times of the season, never fear... If you're not a crowd person, or even if the crowds don't necessarily bother you, but you don't have park admission, you don't need to miss out on the holiday fun. There are plenty of things you can do outside of the parks to keep the holiday spirit alive, so let's talk about some of my favorite ones, so you can start planning!
  1. Hit Up Disney Springs
The ever-changing Disney Springs, formerly known as "Downtown Disney", is a fantastic place to go spend some time and get into the holiday mood. Of course it's the perfect place to do your holiday shopping, since there are tons of stores, ranging from the LEGO Store to Sefora, and The World of Disney to United World Soccer, but it's also a great place for holiday entertainment. Catch stilt-walking toy soldiers, dancing "snowflakes", special Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Christmas entertainment and more. Want to see holiday decorations? There are poinsettias, Christmas trees, and over-sized ornaments all over! More interested in enjoying a festive holiday treat while you shop? There are two Starbucks locations where you can grab a Gingerbread Latte, or stop by Ghirardelli chocolate shop for the best hot cocoa you could imagine! Or even pick up a Christmasy confection at Goofy's Candy Co. And if you're interested in meeting the Man in the Red Suit, Disney Springs is a great place to do so, because of their "virtual queue line". This is like having a FastPass to see Santa. You check into a kiosk and are given an estimated wait time and a pager. You can then shop and enjoy Disney Springs to your heart's delight, and you'll be paged when it's time to come back and meet the Big Guy. Waaaay better than standing in a line for hours!

Whether you're visiting during the day or at nighttime, check out the Christmas Tree Trail, located behind Earl of Sandwich in the Marketplace area. This enchanting trail is adorned with over 20 different Christmas trees, each themed to a different Disney film. There's everything from an under the sea themed Little Mermaid tree, to an icy Frozen tree, and even a jungle-decor Jungle Book tree! Saw it last year? There are a bunch of NEW trees to see for 2017! The trail even gets some Florida "snow", for some extra magic!

I'm also keeping my fingers crossed that Disney's newest technological wonder, Starbright Holidays, will make a return to Disney Springs this year. Though it's yet to be confirmed, it is likely that the drone-powered holiday light show will be back for more Guests to enjoy.

2. Mosey on Over to Fort Wilderness
I love of spending time at Fort Wilderness, and being there during the holidays is even better! During the months of November and December, typically the Campfire Movies that are shown are holiday-themed, like "Muppet Christmas Carol" and "The Santa Clause". There are also holiday sleigh rides to be had, but we will talk more about that later. A really fun and unique thing to do at Fort Wilderness during the holidays is to walk, ride a bike, or even just ride the bus around the campground and check out the Guests' Christmas decorations. It's become customary, and somewhat of a competition, for the campground Guests to bring along their favorite lights, blow-ups, plastic figurines and even costumes and music, to make their campsite the most festive and fun that you have ever seen! It's something unexpected and delightfully fun to do on a cool December night!

3. Jingle All the Way, on a Holiday "Sleigh Ride"
As I mentioned, Fort Wilderness is home to the Holiday Sleigh Ride. Most December evenings, (weather permitting), every 30 minutes, a one-horse-open carriage that is made up to look like a sleigh, departs from outside of Crockett's Tavern, for a ride through the backwoods of the campground. The sleigh is covered in holiday garlands and lights, and if you're lucky enough to get a nice, chilly night, you can bundle up under a blanket and enjoy the twenty five minute ride. The 2017 pricing hasn't been confirmed yet, but pricing for last year was $79 per sleigh, and the carriage can accommodate up to 4 adults, or 2 adults and 3 small children. Though they can be done on a walk-up basis if the sleigh isn't booked up, reservations are highly recommended, and can be made with your Kingdom Konsultant agent. It's a perfect date night activity! In fact, this was one of the very first dates that The Hubs and I went on!
4. Hop All Around the Disney Resorts

One of my favorite things to do at Disney without a park ticket is to "Resort Hop", and check out the various resorts' lobbies and decor, and at Christmastime it's even more magical and memorable! All of the resorts are decked out in their holiday best, from about Thanksgiving, through New Year's Day. Each resort has their own unique garlands, Christmas trees, and in some cases, elaborate holiday displays.
The most popular resorts to visit are the "monorail resorts": The Grand Floridian, The Polynesian and The Contemporary.
The Grand Floridian is widely regarded for its incredible gingerbread house display. The whole lobby smells of the sweet and spicy cookies that cover an elegant, Victorian style shop, which actually sells holiday treats from a window. The house band, The Grand Floridian Society Orchestra, plays holiday tunes, and the huge, ornate Christmas tree can't be missed. The Contemporary also has a fantastic gingerbread display, theirs being themed to Frozen. My daughter loves checking out the cookie versions of Anna and Elsa, in front of their iced cookie palace!

Make sure you hop off of the monorail line and take a detour over to The Wilderness Lodge. I think their holiday decor is the best! The rustic theme of the Lodge lends itself nicely to that warm, homey holiday feeling. Their tree is truly a stunner, and stands over 4 stories tall!

Make sure your Resort Hop also includes the Epcot area resorts! The Yacht and Beach Club lobbies each have their own holiday displays. The Beach Club lobby houses a huge gingerbread carousel, while the Yacht Club hosts a train set and candy village. Very cute and sure to make your kids smile! Over at The BoardWalk, their bakers always go to town with their holiday display, making a festive gingerbread masterpiece that changes year to year. It has been a gingerbread gazebo, a candy Coney Island and even a cookie coated ice cream shop.

And don't forget about the Swan and Dolphin Resorts, which also have holiday decor, displays and incredible Christmas trees to see.
It's always worth stopping over to the Animal Kingdom Lodge, where you'll find breath-taking and unique holiday trees and decor. Really ALL of the resorts have stunning decorations and it's fun to see how they differ. My family likes to visit as many resorts as possible and pose in front of as many different Christmas trees as we can! It makes for a fun, holiday photo safari!
5. Venture Off Disney Property
If you have a car with you, or you don't mind paying for a taxi or an Uber, there are lots of festive activities to enjoy off of Disney property too! Of course you've got outlet malls galore, with the closest one being the Orlando Vineland Premium Outlets, which are close to Disney Springs. (They are not, however, walk-able.) If you're looking for more of an indoor mall experience, you can head out to the Florida Mall, which is just about a fifteen minute ride from Disney property, and features all of the major retailers.
Not looking to shop? Feeling like it's going to take some chillier weather to get you into the holiday spirit? Check out ICE at Gaylord Palms Resort, just a few minutes outside of Disney. The indoor display features ice slides, ice tunnels, ice carvings, ice skating and more. (Don't worry, parkas are provided!) Tickets run about $30 per person, $45 if you want to include snow tubing, and can be purchased in advance online, at gaylordpalmstickets.com

One of my very favorite things to do during the holiday season is visit Disney's nearby town of Celebration. Only a ten minute ride from Disney, the town that was originally developed by Disney, has a beautiful, neighborhood feel, with some Disney magic thrown in. Every night in December, the Market Street area comes to life with carriage rides, Christmas displays, holiday music, "ice" skating, and even "snow"! Every night, at 6, 7, 8 and 9, on the hour, "snow" falls on Market Street, bringing the holiday fun of the North to us Floridians! And when you're done having fun and meeting Santa downtown, take a drive around the neighborhoods and check out the hundreds of beautifully decorated and lit houses! (TIP: This part is even better if you do it with a bag of peppermint bark from Kilwins chocolate shop, and have Christmas music on the car radio!)

Chronos Club Review at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort

I recently stayed at the Chronos Club at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort. I've been a fan of Disney's Coronado Springs Resort since my first visit as it reminds me of my hometown, San Antonio. I've stayed in rooms ranging from preferred, Casita Suite, Tower King, and now Club Level access. The Chronos Club is located on the 15th floor of the Gran Destino Tower and can only be accessed with a key card or MagicBand to a corresponding Club Level reservation. I've previously stayed Club Level at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, Disney's Polynesian Village Resort, Disney's Grand Floridian Resort, Disney's BoardWalk Inn, and Disney's Grand Californian Resort. These are all considered Deluxe Resorts. Something that makes the Chronos Club stand out is that it is located in what Disney considers a Moderate Resort. I was really excited to check out the difference in experience, since there can be a notable difference in price tag for Moderate vs. Deluxe Res

Universal's Volcano Bay Private Cabana Review

On a recent training in Universal Orlando Resort, agents Maci, Ashley, Aubrey and Yaritza and I rented a private cabana for the day at Universal's Volcano Bay. There are multiple locations around the park along with the option to have an upper or lower level, all of which reflect in various pricing. Agent Ashley received an email the day before informing her of where to check-in the next morning. While we were personally escorted to the cabana shortly after check in, the line at the check in location is the same as those getting towels, meaning it was not short. As expressed by an additional guest checking into a different cabana, we would have greatly appreciated a separate line, since this caused our group about a half hour wait. We're all adults and made great use of our time getting some fun pictures before the park was filled with guests, but this is important to be aware of if you are traveling with children.  We had an upper level Cabana which came with a splendid view!

Black Tap Craft Burgers & Shakes

Black Tap Burgers & Shakes is located at the Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort.  It is a fast-casual restaurant, meaning you order your items at the counter, but then they bring it to the table for you.  They have a selection of burgers, wings, salads and chicken and a fun milkshake menu.  If you just want a shake, there's also a walkup window outside, but some special creations can only be ordered for dine-in. We placed our order at the counter and noticed all the tables inside were full. We found a table outside and hung out while we waited for our food to come. They have a full bar and craft beers on tap, but I was surprised to get wine in a can. Strawberry Shortcake Shake We had hoped to have this Crazy Shake for dessert, but it actually came before any of our food. The Strawberry Shortcake is described as a vanilla frosted rim with crumbled cake topped with a strawberry shortcake ice cream bar, pink & white twisty pop, whipped cream, strawberry drizzle
